Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a primary source for high protein, calcium and energy content. The high nutritional content makes alfalfa one of, if not the most, popular hay types. In our area its rather common to achieve four cuttings a season with alfalfa.  If the summer stays on schedule, and the weather cooperates during late September, a fifth cutting is possible.

As our older alfalfa stands continue to age and thin out, we inter-seed orchard grass to create a mixed hay.  Alfalfa/Orchard grass mix provides high quality, but “lower-octane” alternative hay compared to pure alfalfa.
